Many rural communities in Fiji face great difficulty accessing basic medical and dental care due to their remote locations.
New medical dispensaries are providing village nurses with medicine and other supplies they require to care for those in need. Each dispensary offers a facility where remote service providers such as dentists, women’s healthcare specialists and others can come to provide additional services which the local village nurse is not equipped to provide. These services are now available to villagers without having to travel long distances.
A Fiji medical dispensary project was first discussed in 2023 with the Ministry of Health. Government officials identified locations where the medical dispensaries were needed the most. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the Think Pacific foundation organized funding, management and resources to help communities receive the care and supplies they needed.
In January 2024, the first pilot project was launched in the villages of Nawaisomo and Nairukuruku near the interior highlands of Viti Levu Island. By mid-February the first medical dispensaries were established.
At the first dispensary launch, the village chief of Nawaisomo, said, “Our hearts overflow with gratitude to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and Think Pacific. Your support has woven a tapestry of health and hope in our village, shaping a brighter future for all of us in the community.”
Some older residents have commented that they never thought such resources would come to their villages.
Through these contributions made through volunteers and humanitarian missionaries, Think Pacific and The Church of Jesus Christ more medical dispensaries will soon be available in the remote parts of Fiji.
