Auckland Mormons Explain Why Their Meetinghouse is an 'Amazing Place'

Congregation Opens its Doors to the Community

An Auckland ward [congregation] of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints recently welcomed neighbours and friends to their Henderson meetinghouse [church building] in support of the 2014 “Our Amazing Place Massey Community Treasure Hunt.”

Over 400 members of the community enjoyed the Lincoln Park Chapel grounds as part of the 29 March event.

The activity was part of Waitakere Council’s “Massey Matters” initiative, established in 2006 to unite local residents and community groups.

Each year the council selects a cross section of the community to host treasure hunt stations.  At each station, participants are treated to food and learning activities ranging from athletics to water safety.

Local Mormons took the opportunity to share with others why the Church is, in their words, “an amazing place.”

This included an introduction to family history and general information on the importance of families. Many people expressed interest and requested further information.

One visitor, a grandfather, said, “I always drive past the church and wondered what it’s like in here. I’m glad that I got to see your church.”

Latter-day Saint Marilyn Manukia feels the day was a success. “It was a fabulous opportunity to make a difference and share with others some of our values in a fun and creative way,” she said.

Latter-day Saint worship services, each Sunday, are open to anyone who wishes to attend.
