Trent Yeow is like a lot of young people his age. He likes video games, reading and creative writing. What sets him apart is that he is currently serving for two years as a service missionary with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Trent lives in Adelaide, Australia and loves his family. His grandma, Christina Yeow, was a constant example to him of service. He says that she tirelessly served everyone, raising money for the homeless, cancer research and many other charities.
Prior to her passing in 2022, Christina said, “Always remember that there are many out there doing far, far worse than we are, so try to live your life to the fullest, be happy, be content, be charitable in words and in deed and last but not least, love your neighbours as yourself.”
Elder Yeow, as he is called as a missionary, speaks fondly of his Grandma: “I just want to serve and make Grandma proud.”
As a service missionary, Elder Yeow visits with residents at a nearby nursing home.
“I started visiting the home every week and developed many friendships with the residents, playing chess, conversing with them and just being a listening friend,” he said.
Elder Yeow says that through talking with residents he was able to “make them happy and smile. I felt that since I could make others happy, I could channel my efforts into that.”
Each week he also studies the Bible and other scriptures with other young missionaries, and is always looking for ways to help people and make them feel happy.
Elder Barry and Sister Pauline Lee support Elder Yeow and other young Church service missionaries in South Australia.
Sister Lee said, “Elder Yeow is the epitome of the Service Missionary Purpose which is ‘…to help others come unto Christ by serving them as the Saviour would. We serve voluntarily in charitable organisations, Church functions, and within the community. We minister in His name to the one, just as He did in loving kindness.”’
She continued, “That is Elder Yeow. His heart is one of loving kindness. All he wants to do is to serve people as the Saviour did. He looks for any opportunity and goes with it. As a service missionary, he hopes to one day serve in the Adelaide Temple."
Elder Barry Lee said "It’s all about growing and becoming closer to our Saviour as he serves.”
Elder Yeow finds meeting with people and doing interviews stretches him and probably makes him feel the least comfortable. “Talking in front of others and talking about myself can be awkward but I want to do it because I know this will help me grow,” he said.
